Quelques détails de la Maçonnerie, tant spéculative qu'opérative, nous révèlent le sens des fonctions des Officiers d'une Loge. Alors que, dans le monde profane, les anciens titres disparaissent et sont remplacés par de nouveaux termes, l'histoire de la Maçonnerie permet de redécouvrir ces anciens titres du fait qu'elle les utilise toujours. Une étude minutieuse et systématique de cette histoire peut recréer l'ancien usage et reproduire l'ancienne méthode.

Few things pertaining to Masonry are so instructive as the endeavour to unravel the tangle of official ranks, operative and speculative. Old official titles disappear, being substituted by new terms: again the old title is discovered and conferred upon new officers. All is involved, and only the most careful and systematic study can redraw the lost picture and reproduce the ancient method.

The number of enquiries received with reference to the form and scope of the Loyal Toast at Masonic gatherings, seem to indicate that much confusion of thought exists concerning this matter, due to the change of circumstances whereby the Throne is no longer occupied by a member of the Craft.
