The 47th Proposition of the First Book of Euclid
The following was originally published in PILLARS OF LIGHT, copyright 2005

The above proposition is known by most Brethren as the "Pythagorean Proposition." We also know that it is clearly represented in our Past Masters Jewel. But very few know about the connection between Pythagoras and Freemasonry. In fact, the average individual, Mason or profane apparently knows little and cares less about one of the greatest philosophers and deepest thinkers of which tradition and history tells us.

The Masonic Signs: Origin and Meaning
Presented to Meridian Royal Alexandra Lodge no. 125 (G.R.Q.), A.F. & A.M. March 1st, 6006 (A.L.)

Worshipful Master, Distinguished Guests, Brethren all,

I would like to speak today about the Origin and Meaning of the Masonic Signs. It is quite an open question whether the Sign or the Word was first in evidence, although the probabilities are greatly in favour of the former.

The tongue cannot become really intelligible without a grammar and organisation; the sign is a complete paragraph in itself – a narrative, a warning, or a sentiment. More than this, there are occasions when, as a great statesman once said, the principal use of words is to disguise thought. A sign must either expound thought or be a lie – deliberate and brazen.

Masonic Leadership
Presented to Westmount Lodge No. 76 on October 02, 2006

From the point of view of leadership or managerial competence, there is a parallel between Masonry and modern business. To be a good leader in Masonry is to be a good manager; in fact it generally demands more talent and better communication skills than to be a manager in business or industry.

On Yonder Book, The Canadian Charge
The author of the Canadian Charge is believed to be Robert Morris, a major exponent of the OES. It is originally called, "on yonder book". I have here a copy of the poem and annoted the ritual movements associated with it. Enjoy.

The Mason's Ties and Duties

In Mason's Lodge with darkened eyes
And cable tow about you
You swore to Hele all mysteries
That Masons keep and Masons prize
The Brothers secrets whispered low,
The words they speak, the things they do,
In mystic manner taught you.

On yonder book, that oath you took, and you should break it never. But stand by this (1), and this (2), and this (3), forever and forever.

Why "TAPS" are played
If any of you have ever been to a military funeral in which taps were played; this brings out a new meaning of it.

Here is something Every American should know.. Until I read this, I didn't know, but I checked it out and it's true:

We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, "Taps". It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes.

But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.
