On April 30 a new Masonic study group called Philosophus met in the Montreal Masonic Memorial Temple. The first presentation was entitled "Mysteries of Initiation" and was presented by W. Bro. Fayez Oustwani of St. George's Lodge no. 10 (text available here). Over thirty brethren attended, hailing from numerous lodges and all three Degrees. I'd estimate the average age to have been 30 years old.

"The intention of the Philosophus Research Society is to bring to the forefront that third grand principle of Freemasonry, Truth" said W. Bro. Fayez Oustwani in his opening remarks. "Our mission is dedicated to the study of the inner meaning of our Masonic rituals, allegories and symbolism by means of investigating the different interpretations of various Masonic scholars, as to what are those hidden mysteries alluded to in our rituals. As in Freemasonry there is no dogma, we shall expound no absolute doctrine, for we recognize that the interpretations presented are mere opinions and do not reflect any official explanation or direction of any Grand Lodge or other concordant body."

Following the presentation of the paper, the floor was opened to questions and comments and a lively hour of discussion ensued. The group is next scheduled to meet on May 28, 2009 where Bro. Kaled Almadini will speak on the topic of the Fellowcraft Degree.

I was present at this meeting and I can confirm that it was very enlightening and a great initiative on behalf of the organising committee. One great note to make is that there were many younger masons like myself who showed great interest in the subject and participated quite a bit! I look forward to the following meetings.

Very informative
